"Finding Meaning in Gaza Baby's Death"

Looming behind the cinder block house where 4-month-old Iman Hijo was killed by Israeli tank fire on Monday is an Israeli Army bunker in the dunes fringing this refugee camp. The gun nests, perhaps 150 yards away, are clearly visible from the back yard, where the surrounding walls are pocked with bullet holes from what family members said was a sudden attack in full daylight. As plaster began falling and two bullets sliced into the living room, lodging high above the bedroom door, Suzanne Hijo, 19, scooped up her infant daughter and fled with three other children out the front door.
It was there, as they stepped outside, that an Israeli tank shell ripped through a low wall next to their front gate. Razorlike fragments of shrapnel sliced into the baby, killing her almost instantly and severely wounding her mother and the other children. "There was blood everywhere here," said Rocha Hijo, Iman's 15- year-old aunt, scuffing her foot. As the youngest known victim of the violence, Iman quickly became another poignant symbol of violent conflict. For the Palestinians, who gathered by the thousands for her funeral here on Tuesday, the infant was the innocent victim of what they contend is an Israeli policy of collective punishment, with fierce military reprisals on entire neighborhoods after real or alleged guerrilla attacks on Israelis.

They note that there was never any allegation that the Hijos harbored gunmen in their modest compound, which was in effect under 24-hour surveillance. But for Israelis, who said they opened fire after Palestinian militants lobbed six mortar shells at a Jewish settlement, Neve Dekalim, Iman Hijo has also become a symbol. Israeli diplomats and army spokesmen were quick to depict the child as the latest tragic casualty of what they say is a deliberate Palestinian guerrilla tactic of firing from dense urban neighborhoods with the hope of inviting a politically useful military response. "Children and babies should not be involved in this terrible war," said Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, saying he felt great sorrow at the death but blaming it on Palestinian provocation.

Here at the Hijo home, on the militarized border separating the refugee camp from the Israeli settlement a mile west, the infant's death looks messier and less calculated, with an amateur mortar brigade provoking what the Israeli military itself may have concluded was a display of disproportionate and perhaps misdirected force. As Rocha Hijo opened the home to visitors today, Gen. Shaul Mofaz, the army chief of staff, was quietly touring bunkers nearby, gathering reports. According to accounts by Israeli military reporters, which the army declined to deny or confirm, he told officers the shelling of the camp was an "exaggerated" response. Though senior Palestinian officials denied the mortar attack, the settlers offered accounts and physical evidence. And Khan Yunis residents freely acknowledged that their neighborhood was used by roving mortar squads.

After Monday's mortar attack, Israeli tanks pounded the area with what Israeli press reports said were 25 hollow shells, each capable of piercing a wall and killing anyone in its path. The tanks appear to have been aiming at an empty municipal market, across the street from the Hijo house and perhaps 300 yards from the nearest Israeli outpost. If a mortar crew was operating out of the market, as some in the army believed, they apparently escaped unscathed. The only victims of the barrage were members of the Hijo family, a hundred yards away. The family said the house appears to have been strafed simultaneously from the back, at close range, while what may have been a stray shell aimed at the market hit the front.

Many Israeli commentators, virtually all of them military veterans, have skeptically questioned their army's assertions that it invariably responds to attacks with surgical sharp-shooting and pinpoint bombing. Only a few cases of documented shooting deaths by Israeli troops of unarmed Palestinian civilians have prompted internal investigations, according to the army. Irking the Israeli government, the international investigative committee headed by former Senator George J. Mitchell urged Israel to limit itself to the use of "nonlethal force," and to better supervise young draftees under fire.

The training of recruits has also come under question. Today's newspapers reported a fatal shooting in a live-ammunition exercise on Monday, and said it was the third such accidental death in a week. But Rocha Hijo, like many Palestinians, is a believer in the deadly accuracy of Israeli firepower. She is convinced that her family could only have come under fire deliberately, and angrily dismissed Mr. Sharon's expression of regret. "If he is really serious, why did he send his soldiers here?" she said. "Why did he give the orders to his soldiers to kill? `Sorry' isn't enough."

Dr. Riyad Zanoun, Palestinian Minister of Health, declared that the total number of martyrs so far amounts to 801 including 190 children and 30 women, asserting that the number of martyrs during the last three days is 30 martyrs.
He added, in the press conference he held at the State Information Service in Gaza yesterday, that the total number of the casualties is 31,038 so far, including 750 children and 1400 women.
Dr. Zanoun sent an appeal to the general secretary of the UN, the representative of the Red Cross, human rights general commissioner, director general of the WHO in Geneva, the executive head of the Arab Health Ministers Council and the director general of the Middle East Regional Office for World Health, calling for immediate intervention to stop the crimes the Israelis are committing against the Palestinian people.
The minister also condemned the Israeli hijacking of an ambulance, four days ago, and using it in storming and arresting in both Azzon and Salfeet; he added that driver of the ambulance is still lost, describing this action as unprecedented in the history. He added that the Israelis also attacked an ambulance of the UNRWA where Dr. Maher Abu Louh and the driver of the ambulance were injured, and Beit Jala Hospital was attacked by the tanks missiles and heavy machine-guns, resulting in the death of Fawzi Abu Ihlail (30 years old) and the injury of the anesthetist Amjad Al-Balawi.
The minister asserted that the Israeli practices prevent the patients access of hospitals, preventing the ambulances and the medical teams from saving the lives of the injured, causing an atmosphere of disorder and insecurity even in the hospitals, and bombing the electricity transformers.
About the anthrax, Dr. Zanoun asserted that there are no cases suspected or infected with anthrax in Palestine; adding that the Ministry took all the needed cautions to face this disease.
He added that the Ministry Of Health received 10 million dollars from the Islamic Development Bank and asked for other 10 millions yet the bank agreed to give five. He also indicated that there are tons of medications and ambulances are hindered by the Israelis in Al-Areesh.
At the end of the conference , the minister asserted that the ministry is determined to face the hardest circumstances so that it can keep serving the Palestinian people. It is worth mentioning that the office of the deputy minister issued a statement yesterday in Nablus in which it declared that an ambulance has been hijacked by the Israeli forces that use it in its incursion into the Palestinian towns.

Jan. 31, 2002 | JERUSALEM -- "I saw the head of a girl with long black hair lying in the street," said Aaron Pinsker, still trembling hours after an explosion last Sunday killed one Israeli and wounded scores of others. "I didn't recognize it at first. I thought it was a chicken or some animal, but when I looked closer it was clearly a girl. The body I couldn't see anywhere, though." Pinsker, the owner of Pinsker Furniture on Jaffa Road, looked once more at the carnage caused by the blast, and murmured again: "A girl."
What Pinsker saw, it now turns out, were the remains of the Palestinian bomber responsible for the blast in the heart of the city -- the first woman to commit such an act. Palestinian security services Tuesday night informed the family of 27-year-old Wafa Idris, from the Amari refugee camp near Ramallah, that she was the mystery woman who died at the center of the explosion in Jerusalem. She was an activist in the Fatah movement, a divorcee and a paramedic in the Palestinian Red Crescent Society who had been missing since Sunday. Astonishing as the information was, Idris' family didn't question it.
"I know why she did it," says Wafa's older brother Khalil. He was seated on a plastic chair in the bare courtyard of the Amari camp's youth club, receiving the condolences of relatives and friends. "All the terrible things she saw when she worked for the ambulance service, the body parts, the children who were shot, the pregnant women who lost their babies at Israeli checkpoints, it is enough of a motive for any reasonable person." Wafa has honored the family, says Khalil.
Across town in the well-equipped, modern office of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in Ramallah, the mood is not one of acceptance. "It is ridiculous, ridiculous that it has come to this," says Hossam Sharkawi, the visibly shaken coordinator of Emergency Response Services. "It is appalling, it goes against all our principles. We oppose all killings of civilians, we are here to save lives, Palestinians and Israelis equally."
Wafa was one of the most dedicated volunteers over the past two and a half years, says Sharkawi. "She came every Friday, which is our peak time during the intifada because of the riots after prayer. When there were riots during the week she would volunteer for two or three days in a row."
Sharkawi adds that he is aware of the traumas that the work can cause, but he declines to connect Wafa's experiences as a volunteer to the bombing. The rejection of such a connnection is crucial, considering that Idris' actions could very well put the organization at risk. Sharkawi, and other Red Crescent administrators, are anxious to stifle the suggestion that rescuers might turn into bombers as a result of their difficult jobs.
"Everybody who has been out there potentially suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder," says Sharkawi. The Red Crescent set up a trauma program, last June, to screen and counsel its emergency personnel and volunteers. "Obviously the emphasis is on staff more than on volunteers," he says, "but it is impossible to say if her experiences in the ambulance service contributed to her decision to carry out her action."
In the Amari refugee camp, Wafa Idris' family also rejects the idea that Wafa was somehow depressed or overcome by grief as a result of her volunteer work. Instead, they are quick to enumerate the humiliations that Wafa allegedly suffered at the hands of the Israelis. She was hit by rubber bullets three times, and during the first intifada, which started in 1987, the Israelis beat her up, they say. Her brother Khalil says he served eight years in an Israeli prison for being a member of Fatah, which was still banned back then. "She came to see me whenever she could," he says. Wafa was on the camp's women's committee during the first intifada, helping to distribute food at times of curfew, offering social support and looking after prisoners' families, her relatives say.

The Idris family is average -- no richer, no poorer than the rest of the Amari camp's 8,000 residents, says a director of the camp's youth club, who declines to give his name. They were originally refugees from the town of Ramle, in what is now Israel, like many others in the camp. Wafa's father died years ago and her brothers looked after her and her mother.
The house where Wafa lived with her mother during the last few years of her life is dilapidated and messy. Chickens pick grains on the living room floor. Wafa's diploma from the six-month Red Crescent training course, alongside her graduation photo, decorates the mostly bare walls. After she got divorced, Wafa moved back in with her mother, the marriage having failed to produce children, her relatives whisper. Since then her life consisted of caring for her mother, who has a heart ailment, and her volunteer work.
The residents of the Amari camp have evacuated the Idris home and the houses immediately around it, in anticipation of Israeli retribution. In the nearby home of a friend, the women of the family comfort Wafa's 60-year-old mother, Wasfia. She says between sobs that she would never have expected her daughter to do what she did. "She looked like her normal self when she left in the morning," she says. The rest of the family, friends and neighbors close ranks to deliver a deliberate message: "She was not depressed," says a Fatah member at the house, an assistant to Security Chief Jibril Rajoub, as it happens. "She did it out of nationalistic motives, nothing else. She was not sad or religious. She didn't wear a head scarf. We are all proud of her choice."
It is still unclear whether Wafa intended to blow herself up or whether she was carrying the bomb for somebody else. An unofficial statement by Fatah's militant Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades only says that she was "martyred" in the operation. The Israeli police do not classify her as a suicide bomber, just a "bomber." It is possible that Wafa was acting as a courier and that the intended bomber was actually nearby when the device exploded prematurely. The man rumored to be her contact is said to have been lightly wounded and is receiving treatment at an Israeli hospital.
Even if Wafa was accidentally blown up, it is still remarkable that a woman was involved in such an operation. In fact, Wafa's death has sparked a debate among Palestinians about the role of women in the fight against Israel. A spokesman for the Islamist Hamas movement in Gaza has said that there is nothing in the Koran that would bar a woman from "martyrdom." Traditionally, however, women have been limited to less exposed roles.
"We are proud of her," says Hanan, a 21-year-old English literature student at Al-Najjah University in Nablus. Hanan wears a head scarf and voted Hamas in the student elections last October. The student council is dominated by the Islamic Bloc, which is backed by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. "It is good that a woman did this because now the Israelis are facing the whole of the Palestinian people," says Hanan.
Women should take a more active part in the intifada, argues Hanan, even though they are more limited in what they can do than men. "In our society a woman is less free to do what she wants and go wherever she wants but there are also advantages." She suggests that Israelis will now feel even less secure because all Palestinians, men and women, can carry bombs. "I would love to give my life for Palestine," says Hanan. "Maybe one day I will have the courage."

A historian, carried away by his enthusiasm a little, has said that:
"The Moors organized that wonderful kingdom of Corhdova, which was the marvel of the Middle Ages, and which, when all Europe was plunged in barbaric ignorance and strife, alone held the torch of learning and civilization bright and shining before the Western world." Kurtuba (Cordova) was capital of this Kingdom for just 500 years. Kurtuba was the capital of this kingdom for just 500 years. This is usually called Cordoba in English, sometimes Cordova. I am afraid I have a way of spelling the same name differently at times. But I shall try to stick to Cordoba. This was a great city of a million inhabitants, a garden city ten miles in length, with twenty-four miles of suburbs. There are said to have been 60,000 palaces and 700 public baths. These figures may be exaggerations, but they give some idea of the city. There were many libraries, the chief of these, the Imperial Library of the Emir, containing 400,000 books. The University of Cordoba was famous all over Europe and even in western Asia. Free elementary schools for the poor abounded. A historian says that: "In Spain almost everybody knew how to read and write, whilst in Christian Europe, save and except the clergy, even persons belonging to the highest ranks were wholly ignorant. Such was the city of Cordova, competing with the other great Arab city of Baghdad. Its fame spread all over Europe and a German writer of the tenth century called it "the ornament of the world". To its university came students from distant places. The influence of Arab philosophy spread to the other great universities of Europe, Paris, Oxford and the universities of northern Italy. Averroes or Ibn Rushd was a famous philosopher of Cordova in the twelfth century. In his later years he fell out with the Spanish Emir and was banished. He went and settled in Paris.
As in other parts of Europe, there was a kind of feudal system in Spain also. Great and powerful nobles grew up, and between them and the Emir, who was the ruler, there was frequent fighting.
An English historian, Lane Poole, writing of the Saracens in Spain says:
"For centuries Spain had been the center of civilization, the seat of arts and sciences, of learning and every form of refined enlightenment. No other country in Europe had so far approached the cultivated dominion of the Moors. The brief brilliancy of Ferdinand and Isabella, and of the Empire of Charles, could found no such enduring pre-eminence. The Moors were banished; for a while Christian Spain shone, like the moon, with a borrowed light; then came the eclipse, and in that darkness Spain has grovelled ever since. The true memorial of the Moors is seen in desolate tracts of utter barrenness, where once the Moors grew luxuriant vines and olives and yellow ears of corn; in a stupid, ignorant stagnation and degradation of a people which has hopelessly fallen in the scale of nations, and has deserved its humiliation. In central and western Asia we see the remnants of the Abbaside Empire of Baghdad. Baghdad still flourishes, and indeed is increasing in power under a newest of rulers, the Seljuq Turks.But the old empire has slit up into many kingdoms. Islam has ceased to be one empire and has become merely the religion of many countries and peoples. Out of the wreck of the Abbaside Empire has arisen the kingdom of Ghazni, which Mahmud has ruled and from which he has swooped down on India. But though the Empire of Baghdad has broken up, Baghdad itself continues to be a great city, attracting artists and learned men from distances. Many great and famous cities also flourish in central Asia at this time Bokhara, Samarqand, Balkh and others. And extensive trade is carried on between them and great caravans carry merchandise from one to the other.
The Spanish Christians seem to have been very much against washing and bathing. Perhaps they objected to these simply because the Spanish Arabs were very fond of them and had erected great public baths all over the place. The Christians even went so far as to issue orders "for the reformation of the Moriscos" or Moors or Arabs, that "Neither themselves, their women, nor any other persons, should be permitted to wash or bathe themselves either at home or elsewhere; and that all their bathing houses should be pulled down and destroyed".
Apart from the sin of washing, another great charge brought against the "Moriscos" was that they were tolerant in religion.It is extraordinary to read of this, and yet this was one of the main charges in an account of the "Archbishop of Valencia in 1602, when he was recommending the expulsion of Saracens from Spain. Referring to this he says, "that they (the Moriscos) commended nothing so much as that liberty of conscience in all matters of religion, which the Turks, and all other Mohammedans, suffer their subjects to enjoy". What a great compliment was thus paid unwittingly to the Saracens in Spain, and how different and intolerant was the outlook of the Spanish Christians! Millions of Saracens were driven out forcibly from Spain, mostly into Africa,some to France. The Arabs had been in Spain for seven hundred years; and during this long period they had become to a large extent merged in the people of Spanish. Probably the Spanish Arabs of later years were quite different form the Arabs of Baghdad. Even to-day the Spanish race has much of Arab blood in its veins. The Saracens had also spread to the south of France and even to Switzerland, not as rulers, but as settlers. Sometimes even now one comes across an Arab type of face among the Frenchmen from the midi. Thus ended, not only Saracens rule in Spain, but also Arab civilization. For, even earlier, this civilization had collapsed in Asia, as we shall presently see. It influenced many countries and many cultures, and left many a bright souvenir. But it did not rise again by itself in after-history. After the Saracens left, Spain, under Ferdinand and Isabella, grew power. Soon afterwards, the discovery of America brought vast wealth to it, and for a while it was the most powerful country in Europe, dominating others. But its fall was rapid and it sank into insignificance, and while the other countries of Europe advanced, Spain remained stagnant, dreaming still of the Middle Ages and not realizing that the world had changed since then. Many of the Saracens or Arab Muslims left Spain and went to Africa. Near Granada, overlooking the city, there is a spot which still bears the of "El ultimo sospiro del moro", the last sigh of the Moor. But many muslims were killed brutally along with all the Jews and for the cruelty of the so called Christianity of the west there is no trace of those muslims who ruled there for around 800 long years.
Only the ignorant and enemies of Islam will not want to talk on Caliphate. Middle East means Caliphate and nothing. A Muslim must take baya i.e. the oath of allegiance at the hand of a Caliph as it is part of faith. No nation can survive without a leader. So World Muslims can not survive without a Caliph. So called Israel was created after Sultan (Caliph) Abdul Hamid refused it and so Without Caliphate there will be no peace in This World, I repeat without Caliphate there will be no peace in this World and surely without Caliphate the World will be destroyed by those who destroyed the Caliphate.
We do not attack anyone. We only attack and ready to attack to the traitors within and outside. So accept the truth with proof. We do not conspire against any nation. We do not bribe to any separatist group of any country.
So we will not tolerate any one who will interfere in our internal affairs.
